After spending the best part of a year lost in a world of eminently forgettable hiphop tracks, soulful breaks supremo DJ Mutiny (described most accurately by his three-year-old son as a "sad, strange little man") finally returns to the breaks scene with another painfully futile attempt to combine dancefloor-friendly beats and bass with "nice strings and stuff", as he oh-so-poetically puts it. We just hope it doesn't drive us into bankruptcy this time. Fingers crossed people! Otherwise it's going to be another chocolate-free easter over at Soulful-But-Impoverished Towers (although if you do happen to find yourselves in the local Woolworths, please think of us...).
'Fred's Message' is one hell of a big track to come back with... Soul-soaked vocal clips, blaxploitation funk guitars, spellbinding synth riffs, cheeky edits, obscenely large subs and shamelessly phat drums have all been sprinkled liberally into this breakbeat casserole. Chuck some Black Panther samples into the pot in a vain attempt to lend the music a bit of real-world credibility and you have some seriously succulent electronic soul food! It may not be healthy (rather high in saturated fats) but it sho is tasty! Serve with mashed potatoes and black eyed peas.
